Magpul MOE Carbine Stock Overview

The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock (Mil-Spec) is a drop-in replacement buttstock for AR15/M16 carbines using Mil-Spec sized receiver extension tubes. Designed under Magpul’s Original Equipment line, the MOE Carbine Stock delivers a high-quality alternative to standard AR furniture at an economical price point without sacrificing the engineering and material quality Magpul is known for. Whether you’re upgrading a factory rifle or building from scratch, this is a straightforward, no-nonsense stock that gets the job done.

The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock features a streamlined A-frame profile optimized for light, fast action. This design minimizes snagging during shouldering and movement while shielding the release latch from accidental activation. A premium chrome-silicon lock spring ensures positive locking at each position and resists spring relaxation over extended use. The included 0.30″ rubber butt-pad provides anti-slip purchase against the shoulder, performing reliably even with body armor or modular gear. Made in the USA with NSN numbers assigned for government procurement.

The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock works with Mil-Spec sized carbine receiver extension tubes from manufacturers including Colt, LMT, Ruger, S&W, SIG, and Armalite. It weighs just 8.0 oz (12.0 oz with receiver extension), offers a 3.3″ length of pull adjustment range, and extends from approximately 10.5″ to 13.8″ LOP on a standard M4 receiver extension. Available in Black, OD Green, Flat Dark Earth, and Gray from the factory, with additional Cerakote options through select retailers.

What Makes the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock Different

Streamlined A-Frame Profile
The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock utilizes a sleek A-frame design that reduces bulk and prevents snagging during dynamic movement or when transitioning between targets. This profile complements the natural lines of the AR platform while keeping the overall package compact and maneuverable.

Shielded Release Latch
The position adjustment lever is protected by the stock body, preventing accidental collapse during use. This addresses a common complaint with standard M4 stocks where the latch can be inadvertently pressed during shouldering or while wearing gear. The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock keeps the latch accessible but protected.

Premium Chrome-Silicon Lock Spring
Unlike standard carbine stocks that use conventional springs, the MOE Carbine Stock employs a chrome-silicon lock spring. This material provides stronger positive locking and resists relaxation over thousands of cycles, preventing the auto-collapse failures that can occur with lower-quality springs.

Sloping Cheek Weld
The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock combines a slim profile with user comfort through its contoured cheek weld area. The design maintains a low profile while still providing consistent cheek placement for proper sight alignment. Compatible with Magpul CTR Cheek Risers for shooters who need additional height.

Multiple Sling Attachment Options
The stock includes integrated 1.25″ sling loops at the rear and bottom, plus a lanyard hole at the toe for custom paracord configurations. The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock is also compatible with Magpul ASAP, ASAP QD, and other receiver-mount sling attachments, giving you flexibility in how you configure your rifle.

Magpul MOE Carbine Stock FAQ

What is the difference between Mil-Spec and Commercial-Spec for the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock?
The critical difference is buffer tube diameter. Mil-Spec tubes measure approximately 1.148″ in diameter while Commercial-Spec tubes measure approximately 1.168″. The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock Mil-Spec model will only fit properly on Mil-Spec buffer tubes. A Mil-Spec stock will not fit on a Commercial tube (too tight), and a Commercial stock will be loose and wobbly on a Mil-Spec tube. If you are unsure which you have, measure your buffer tube with calipers or purchase the Mil-Spec version, as this has become the industry standard.
What manufacturers make compatible buffer tubes for the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock?
The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock (Mil-Spec) is compatible with Mil-Spec sized carbine receiver extension tubes from Colt, LMT, Ruger, S&W, SIG, Armalite, and most other manufacturers producing Mil-Spec components. Most modern AR15 builds and factory rifles use Mil-Spec tubes. The receiver extension tube is not included with the stock.
What are the dimensions and weight of the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock?
The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock weighs 8.0 oz on its own (12.0 oz when combined with a receiver extension). Maximum length is 6.9 inches. The length of pull adjustment range is 3.3 inches, providing approximately 10.5″ LOP when collapsed and 13.8″ LOP when fully extended on a standard M4 carbine receiver extension. Specifications may vary slightly depending on buffer tube manufacturer.
Is the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock compatible with cheek risers?
Yes. The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock features side mounting slots that accept Magpul CTR Cheek Risers. These risers are useful when the stock is fully extended or on rifles without rear-facing charging handles. The mounting slots also work for non-AR15/M16 applications where the stock is adapted to other platforms.
What sling mounting options does the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock offer?
The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock provides multiple sling attachment points: integrated 1.25″ sling loops at the rear and bottom of the stock, plus a lanyard hole at the toe for custom paracord rigging. It is also compatible with Magpul ASAP, ASAP QD, and other receiver-mount sling attachments that mount to the lower receiver.
Is the rubber butt-pad on the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock removable?
Yes. The 0.30″ thick rubber butt-pad included with the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock is removable. This allows for replacement or cleaning. The pad provides an anti-slip surface and impact protection during shoulder transitions, performing effectively even when used with body armor or tactical gear.
What colors are available for the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock?
Factory colors from Magpul include Black, OD Green, Flat Dark Earth (FDE), and Gray. Some retailers offer additional Cerakote finishes including Pink, Tungsten, Titanium, Red, and Burnt Bronze. Cerakoted versions may show wear marks with heavy use as the coating is applied over the polymer body.
Does the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock have any play or wobble when installed?
The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock may have minimal play when installed, as it does not include the friction lock mechanism found on the more expensive Magpul CTR stock. For most users, the amount of movement is negligible and does not affect function. If eliminating all wobble is a priority, consider upgrading to the CTR model.

Compatibility

The Magpul MOE Carbine Stock (Mil-Spec) fits AR15, M16, M4, AR10, M110, and SR25 platforms equipped with Mil-Spec sized carbine receiver extension tubes. Compatible with buffer tubes from Colt, LMT, Ruger, S&W, SIG, Armalite, and other manufacturers producing Mil-Spec components.

Not Compatible

This Mil-Spec model will NOT fit Commercial-Spec buffer tubes (1.168″ diameter). Do not attempt to install on Commercial-Spec extensions. If you have a Commercial-Spec buffer tube, order the Magpul MOE Carbine Stock Commercial-Spec (MAG401) instead. Not compatible with rifle-length or pistol buffer tubes.
